Riding Tour Schedule
The main week long rides and horse treks are scheduled every second week year-round (please refer to the individual Tours Pages and Tour Schedule Overview for dates) and are planned according to suitable low tide times for the beach horse ride.
Weekend rides are scheduled a few times per year, often around Australian Public Holiday long weekends, or can be arranged on request with a minimum of 2 persons - please contact us for dates.
Shorter trail rides (2 hour, half day and single day rides) can be requested anytime but take place by special arrangement only and are depending on availability.
Horse Rider Abilities & Experience
Southern Cross Horse Treks only accept experienced adult horse riders for all horse riding tours (Good intermediate to advanced riding level - please refer to the Booking Form for riding level criteria, and please enquire if you are unsure about your level).
Horse riders must be able to mount / dismount unassisted, have a firm seat and be confident and capable to control a forward going and fit horse at all paces in varied open terrain.
Leading one's horse over short distances may sometimes be required.
The horse riding tours and trail horses are not suitable for children or inexperienced (beginner and / or novice) riders and a reasonable amount of fitness is required for all rides.
As an exception we occasionally accept children of 15-17 years old who are good horse riders and who are accompanied by a capable horseriding parent.
Due to the pace, duration and hilly terrain of our horse riding tours we have set rider weight limits for each individual horse with an overall weight limit of 80 - 85 kilo (depending on riding ability and height).
English Riding Style & Endurance Saddles
The Southern Cross Horse Treks horses are trained to be ridden in English style, on a loose rein or light contact.
Horse tack are lightweight Australian made endurance saddles and snaffle bits or bitless bridles (gentle hackamores or rope halters).
Horse Riding Tours Pace & Distance
Riding is in all gaits (walk, trot, canter, gallop); riding pace is moderate with long active walks, trotting, canters and fast galloping sections of up to 4 km's). Horse riding pace and tour itineraries are subject to terrain & weather conditions. Each day of riding generally covers 30 to 40 km per day in 4-6 hours riding.
From a riding level perspective all riding tours are similar. It should not be assumed that the stationary riding program is easier or less challenging then the progressive trek tours. Since the farm - based ride (A) follows mostly forestry trails it generally offers more opportunities for long fast gallops then the trek tour ride (B and C), which go into small farming communities and follow some rural roads. Consequently the treks have some days with a slower pace which gives horse riders the opportunity to take in the scenic farmland views.
Horse Riding Treks In Small Groups
Southern Cross Horse Treks Australia keeps the horse riding tour groups small, with a maximum of 4 riders and 1 tour guide, to ensure a high quality riding experience.
Riding groups usually consist of single travellers or couples from all parts of the world meeting at Kerewong for the first time and guests often leave with new like-minded friends. You can come alone and leave as friends!
Single travellers are welcome to join the scheduled tours.
Alternatively, if you already have a party of 3 - 4 riders you make up your own exclusive group.
