Horse Details
Southern Cross Horse Treks proudly promotes the Australian Brumbies in general and the Guy Fawkes Heritage Horse Breed in particular. Guest Riders get the chance to experience first hand the fantastic temperament of these once wild horses. The Guy Fawkes River National Park is located approximately 250 km North from the Southern Cross Horse Treks Farm Property Kerewong.
As a human, were you a short-legged chubby little guy joining a new group of long-legged gracious sports models, you may be a bit worried about being accepted or it may to some degree lower your confidence. But as a short-legged chubby little Brumby named Dodge, joining an established herd of super fit Arabian horses, you're just not worried at all. You just stick to yourself, keep your head down, eat as much food as possible and wait for your moment to take control of the whole lot.
Dodge is just happy and confident within himself and life as it is, as long as there is food around and there is always enough food for all at Kerewong, so Dodge is good. Looking at him and calling him Dodgy, you can't help but smile when he greets you with a cute little nicker. He is smart, he is funny, he is kind and if he could pick a place in his new herd, it would be the top spot. He's not there yet (he does have a good sense of self-preservation), which he's cool with, because he knows his time will come. In the meantime he's just chilled, doesn't put too much energy into moving fast, sticks to himself and his blond brumby brother (who likes to socialise a lot) and eats.
And he can work too and will get plenty of that to keep his expanding belly under control.
Looking at him and handling him, you'd think Dodge be a chilled horse to ride and he is most of the time. But he's got brains and with Pony Looks comes Pony Power, and he's got some of that too.
With his short pony stature and friendly stoic nature, Dodge is so different from any of the other Kerewong horses (except he's kind of a short version of old Quarterhorse Copper). His brother has got the colour but Dodge is the Gold Nugget, he will win a soft spot in many guests and helpers hearts. With his intelligence and spot-on attitude, he's "on the ball" and everybody can see it. He's got what it takes to become the herd leader eventually and he wears the battle scars from his past life in the wild to prove it.
A versatile bright little horse.
Edit: One year after his arrival Dodge went up the herd hierachy and claimed the first spot at feed time. He did not kick or bite once to claim this spot.
What Dodge teaches us: don't worry be happy.
